DESCRIPTION OF OCCURRENCE:
On 06/28/17 staff member (1) reported staff member (2) ignored a female patient's complaint of pain. The patient was in her 50s.
FACILITY ACTION: The facility conducted an internal investigation and notified the police and physician. The staff member was placed on administrative leave. Staff member (2) was orienting a new staff member (staff member ). As they passed the patient's room, the patient told them she was concerned about tooth pain and requested pain medication. According to staff member (1), staff member (2) was dismissive of the patient and did not offer her pain medication. The patient's record was reviewed and noted the patient had dental issues and had been to Dental Clinic for chronic tooth pain. She had a tooth that needed to be extracted but she would not consent to this treatment. She had been put on Amoxicillin for her acute infection. The record showed no pain medication had been given on 06/28/17. The facility issued a corrective action for staff member (2) which included retraining in several areas.
In accordance with Colorado Revised Statute 25-1-124, the Department conducted an off-site investigation of this reportable event and investigative findings submitted by the agency/facility. This public summary is based on information provided by the agency/facility to the Occurrence Section of the Department and is accurate and complete at this time. Prior to the next onsite investigation of the agency/facility, this occurrence will be reviewed.
