DESCRIPTION OF OCCURRENCE:
On 06/13/17 a male patient (A), in his 30s, struck another male patient (B), also in his 30s.
The facility conducted an internal investigation and notified the physician and the police department. Patient (B) exited his room and began calling patient (A) racially inappropriate names and threatened to assault him. Patient (B) walked up to patient (A) and began swinging his arms at him. Staff intervened and patient (B) stated patient (A) had been saying things he did not like. Staff noticed patient (B) had redness and swelling to his right eye. Patient (A) had entered patient (B's) room before patient (B) had come out of his room and patient (A) assaulted him. Both patients had mental health diagnoses and a history of behavior problems which had been care planned. Patient (B) reported that resident (A) had went into his room and punched him one time on the eye. Patient (A) was placed on assault II precautions.
In accordance with Colorado Revised Statute 25-1-124, the Department conducted an off-site investigation of this reportable event and investigative findings submitted by the facility. This public summary is based on information provided by the facility to the Occurrence Section of the Department and is accurate and complete at this time. Prior to the next onsite investigation of the facility, this occurrence will be reviewed.
