|Facility: COLORADO MENTAL HEALTH INSTITUTE AT PUEBLO-PSYCH
Date of Occurrence: 4/25/2017
Report Timely: Yes
Type of Occurrence: Misappropriation of Property
DESCRIPTION OF OCCURRENCE:
On 04/25/17 a male patient, in his 50s, reported missing his wallet with $15 in cash inside.
The facility conducted an internal investigation and notified the police department. After the patient reported the missing item, staff searched his room, but the wallet was not located. Staff searched the bathroom and found the wallet at the bottom of a trash can, but the money was not in the wallet. Another patient (B) reported patient (C) had attempted to give him some money, but he refused. Staff searched patient (C's) room and found $17 in cash in his wallet. Patient (C) denied stealing patient (A's) money. Staff were not able to prove the money did not belong to patient (C). Patient (C) was moved to a room next to the nurse's station to be monitored more closely. He was not allowed to go down the patient hallway to use the bathroom or shower without staff escort. The facility believed patient (C) probably took resident (A's) wallet, removed the money and threw it in the trash. Patient (A) was reminded of the importance of securing his personal property.
The Department reviewed the facility's report and supplemental documentation and found that the facility acted appropriately by reporting the occurrence, notifying the appropriate persons/agencies and conducting an investigation. The summary findings were based on facility information provided to the department at the time of review. The Department will review this occurrence prior to the next survey.
