DESCRIPTION OF OCCURRENCE:
On 02/12/17 male patient (A), in his 50s, yelled and swore at male patient (B) and then spat in his face. Patient (B) was in his 20s.
The facility conducted an internal investigation and notified the physician and police. Patient (A) was in the day hall when he began to yell and swear at patient (B). Staff redirected patient (A) who then stood up and spat in patient (B)'s face. Staff placed patient (A) in a manual hold and applied a spit hood as he continued to spit on the floor. They escorted patient (A) to his room. Patient (B) reported the saliva had landed in his eyes even though he was wearing glasses at the time. Staff assessed patient (B) and had him wash his face with soap and water. His physician ordered lab work on both patients to test for blood pathogens and the lab work was negative. Both patients were on the highest level of security and both were on Intractable Injurious Behavior Plans and Assault Precautions.
The Department reviewed the facility's report and supplemental documentation and found that the facility acted appropriately by reporting the occurrence, notifying the appropriate persons and agencies and conducting an investigation.
The Department will review this occurrence prior to the next survey. The summary findings were based on the information provided by the facility at the time of the Department review.
