DESCRIPTION OF OCCURRENCE:
On 02/07/17 female patient (A), in her 30s, was witnessed coming out of female patient (B)'s room. Patient (B) was in her 50s. Patient (A) had taken 7 batteries belonging to patient (B).
The facility conducted an internal investigation and notified the physician and police. Patient (A) was questioned when she was seen leaving patient (B)'s room. She denied doing anything wrong. Patient (B) reported she was missing 4 batteries from her room. Patient (A)'s room was searched and 7 batteries were discovered hidden in a sock in her wardrobe closet. Patient (A) denied taking the batteries. Staff replaced patient (B)'s batteries. Police counseled patient (A) about the consequences of theft. Patient (A) was moved to a room closer to the nurses station where she can be monitored closely.
The Department reviewed the facility's report and supplemental documentation and found that the facility acted appropriately by reporting the occurrence, notifying the appropriate persons and agencies and conducting an investigation.
The Department will review this occurrence prior to the next survey. The summary findings were based on the information provided by the facility at the time of the Department review.
