DESCRIPTION OF OCCURRENCE:
On 01/07/17 male patient (A), in his 20s, began hitting male patient (B) in the face. Patient (B) was in his 30s.
The facility conducted an internal investigation and notified the police and physician. The patients were standing near the nurses station. Patient (B) kept stepping on patient (A)'s toes. Patient (A) then began hitting patient (B) in the face. Staff escorted patient (B) to the treatment room. He was assessed and had no visible injuries but did say his jaw was sore. His vital signs and neurological checks were within normal limits. Patient (A) was assessed and had superficial cuts to his knuckles which he cleaned. Patient (A) was put on Assault Precautions and Peer Restriction. Patient (B) was also placed on Peer Restriction to keep him away from patient (A).
The Department reviewed the facility's report and supplemental documentation and found that the facility acted appropriately by reporting the occurrence, notifying the appropriate persons and agencies and conducting an investigation.
The Department will review this occurrence prior to the next survey. The summary findings were based on the information provided by the facility at the time of the Department review.
