DESCRIPTION OF OCCURRENCE:
On 01/03/2017, two male patients, both in their 60's, got into a physical altercation in which patient (A) stuck patient (B) on his face.
The facility conducted an internal investigation and notified the police and physician. Staff witnessed patient (A) and patient (B) in a physical struggle in which patient (A) punched patient (B) on the right side of his face. Staff intervened and immediately separated the patients and assessed patient (B) for injury. Patient (B) sustained a one inch laceration under his right eye from the glasses he was wearing at the time he was punched and was treated using steri-strips. Patient (B) reported that he was not fearful of patient (A). Both patients have a history of behavioral issues for which the facility had care planned for appropriately. Both patients were placed on assault precautions and a peer restriction between the two patients was implemented.
The Department reviewed the facility's report and supplemental documentation and found that the facility acted appropriately by reporting the occurrence, notifying the appropriate persons/agencies and conducting an investigation. The summary findings were based on facility information provided to the department at the time of review.
The Department will review this occurrence prior to the next survey.
