DESCRIPTION OF OCCURRENCE:
On 11/22/16, a male patient (A) in his 20s and another male patient (B), also in his 20s, were involved in a physical altercation.
The facility conducted an internal investigation and notified the physician and the police department. Patient (A) said something to patient (B). Patient (B) pushed patient (A), who then kicked patient (B) in the groin and then pushed him. The patients began to fight and staff separated the two patients. Both patients had mental health diagnoses with a history of behavior problems. The patients were assessed and patient (B) sustained a small cut to his upper lip and patient (A) sustained an abrasion to his knuckle on his right ring finger. Patient (A) was placed on assault II precaution and a peer restriction from patient (B). Patient (B) was placed on assault precautions and a peer restriction from patient (A).
The Department reviewed the facility's report and supplemental documentation and found that the facility acted appropriately by reporting the occurrence, notifying the appropriate persons/agencies and conducting an investigation.
The Department will review this occurrence prior to the next survey.
