DESCRIPTION OF OCCURRENCE:
On 10/31/16 male patient (A), in his 70s, assaulted another male patient (B), who was in his 50s.
The facility conducted an internal investigation and notified the police and physician. It was reported patient (B) began to yell profanities at patient (A). Patient (A) responded by swinging his arms at patient (B). Staff quickly intervened, and while attempting to separate the patients, patient (A) reached out and started choking patient (B). Patient (A) also pushed patient (B) which caused him to fall backwards and hit his head. Staff was successful in separating the patients and escorted patient (A) back to his room. Nursing assessed patient (B) and found bruising and an abrasion to the neck area. First aid treatment was provided. Patient (B) stated patient (A) had pushed him for no reason. Staff reported patient (A) pushed patient (B) without any provocation. Patient (B) was moved to another unit and assault precautions were implemented on patient (A).
The Department reviewed the facility's report and supplemental documentation and found that the facility acted appropriately by reporting the occurrence, notifying the appropriate persons/agencies and conducting an investigation. The summary findings were based on facility information provided to the Department at the time of review.
The Department will review this occurrence prior to the next survey.
