DESCRIPTION OF OCCURRENCE:
On 8/12/16 male patient (A), in his 30s, was punched by male patient (B), who was in his 40s.
The facility conducted an internal investigation and notified the police and physicians. Patient (B) told patient (A) that he could not go to the bathroom. Patient (A) became angry and began calling patient (B) names. Patient (A) told Patient (B), "Bring it on." Patient (B) responded by punching patient (A) who was holding his hands up to deflect blows. Staff intervened and were able to separate the patients. Patient (A) was assessed and had a small scratch on his hand that was cleansed with soap and water. The facility concluded that the allegation was substantiated. Patient (B) was placed on assault precautions, and was transferred to a different unit away from patient (A).
The Department reviewed the facility's report and supplemental documentation and found that the facility acted appropriately by reporting the occurrence, notifying the appropriate persons and agencies and conducting an investigation.
The Department will review this occurrence prior to the next survey.
