Date of Occurrence: 8/6/2016
Report Timely: Yes
Type of Occurrence: Misappropriation of Property
DESCRIPTION OF OCCURRENCE:
On 08/08/16 a male patient, in his 50's, reported he was missing a blanket representing a professional sports team.
The facility conducted an internal investigation and notified the police. The patient had a history of mild intellectual disability and memory deficits. The patient laundered his personal clothing and blankets on the unit with the assistance of staff. On 08/08/16, the patient reported he had not seen his blanket since 08/06/16. The patient's room and belongings were searched, but the blanket was not located. The facility also searched the laundry room, other patient rooms, and common areas, but was unable to find the patient's blanket. The facility identified a high likelihood that the blanket was accidentally sent to the laundry room by staff. The facility planned to review the process for laundering patient's personal belongings during nursing rounds and at an upcoming team meeting. The facility planned to replace the patient's blanket.
The Department reviewed the facility's report and supplemental documentation and found that the facility acted appropriately by reporting the occurrence, notifying the appropriate persons and agencies and conducting an investigation.
The Department will review this occurrence prior to the next survey.
