Date of Occurrence: 6/9/2016
Report Timely: Yes
Type of Occurrence: Neglect
DESCRIPTION OF OCCURRENCE:
On 06/10/16 a female patient, in her 20s, reported the RN (registered nurse) failed to provide appropriate care to her the previous evening.
The facility conducted an internal investigation and notified the police and Board of Nursing. The patient was 17 weeks pregnant. She said she reported to the RN that she was spotting and had abdominal cramping. The RN gave her Tums, told her the bleeding was normal, did not notify her physician of the bleeding, did not write a progress note and did not identify the issue during the change of shift report. After reporting the occurrence, the patient was assessed by the nurse practitioner and OB/GYN physician and bed rest for 24 hours, increased fluids and monitoring of vital signs were ordered. The RN was placed on administrative leave. The facility investigation substantiated the neglect allegation. Disciplinary actions included increased supervision, additional training and a pay reduction for 3 months.
The Department reviewed the facility's report and supplemental documentation and found that the facility acted appropriately by reporting the occurrence, notifying the appropriate persons and agencies and conducting an investigation.
The Department will review this occurrence prior to the next survey.
