DESCRIPTION OF OCCURRENCE:
On 03/23/16 male patient (A), in his 30s, punched male patient (B), who was in his 20s.
The facility conducted an internal investigation and notified the physician and the police department. The patients were sitting in the hall when they began to argue. Patient (A) approached patient (B) from behind and punched him on the left side of his face. Staff intervened and the duress alarm was activated. Additional staff arrived and separated the patients. Both patients had mental health diagnoses and histories of behavior problems which had been care planned. Patient (A) was escorted to his room and administered "as needed" medications. Patient (B) was assessed and no visible injury noted. Staff reported the argument started over the television. Patient (A) had already been placed on assault II precautions and completed a ten day course of emergency medications and his behaviors improved considerably. He had not presented with any agitation or aggressive behaviors and was less psychotic.
The Department reviewed the facility's report and supplemental documentation and found that the facility acted appropriately by reporting the occurrence, notifying the appropriate persons/agencies and conducting an investigation.
The Department will review this occurrence prior to the next survey.
