DESCRIPTION OF OCCURRENCE:
On 10/29/15 male patient (A), in his 20s, punched male patient (B), who was in his 50s.
The facility conducted an internal investigation. The facility notified the physician and hospital police. Patient (B) sneezed in a group setting and patient (A) punched him stating, "he sneezed on me on purpose." Staff intervened and separated the residents. Nursing assessed the patients and patient (B) had a cut on his upper lip and a split lip. He denied having pain or other injuries. He declined any treatment. He stated he was not afraid and did not want to press charges. Patient (A) was placed on wing observation, peer restriction and assault II precautions. Patient (B) was also placed on peer restrictions. The care plans were updated to reflect the plan of care changes.
The Department reviewed the facility's report and found that the facility acted appropriately by reporting the occurrence, notifying the appropriate persons and agencies, separating the residents, assessing the residents, offering first aid, moving patient (A) and implementing assault II precautions.
The Department will review this occurrence prior to any survey or upon receipt of any complaint that may be filed against this facility.
