DESCRIPTION OF OCCURRENCE:
On 09/15/15 male patient (A), in his 30s, physically attacked a male patient (B), who was in his 50s.
The facility conducted an internal investigation. The facility notified the physician, police department, and appropriate facility administration and personnel. Patient (B) was sitting on the couch watching television. Patient (A) approached the nurse's station and then walked over to patient (B) and punched him in the face. Patient (A) was restrained until he became calm and cooperative. Patient (A) was escorted to his room. Patient (B) was assessed and there were no injuries noted. Patient (B) complained of pain and was given pain medication. Patient (B) did not express fear of patient (A). Patient (A) reported patient (B) was entering his room when it was vacant. Patient (A) stated he came to this conclusion when he was outside jogging. Patient (B) did not press charges against patient (A). The facility placed patient (A) on assault precautions and a medical review of patient (A)'s medications will scheduled.
The Department reviewed the facility's report and supplemental documentation and found that the facility acted appropriately by reporting the occurrence, notifying the appropriate persons and agencies, restraining patient (A) until he was calm, escorting patient (A) to his room, assessing patient (B), providing patient (B) pain medication, conducting an investigation, initiating assault precautions for patient (A), and conducting a medication review for patient (A).
The Department will review this occurrence prior to any survey or upon receipt of any complaint that may be filed against this facility.
