DESCRIPTION OF OCCURRENCE:
On 09/16/15 male patient (B), in his 60s, was physically assaulted by male patient (A), in is 60s.
The facility conducted an internal investigation. The facility notified the physician, police department, and appropriate facility administration and personnel. Patient (B) was hitting the couch in the hall with his hand when patient (A) began yelling at him. Patient (A) told patient (B) to stop and then punched patient (B) in the arm. Patient (A) grabbed patient (B)'s wrist and held it down by the side of the couch. Staff intervened by placing patient (A) in a manual hold. Staff escorted patient (A) to his room. Patient (B) was assessed and there was redness to his arm where patient (A) had grabbed him. Patient (B) complained of pain and refused pain medication. Patient (B) refused to participate in an interview and did not press any charges against patient (A). There were no changes noted in patient (B)'s behavior. The facility initiated assault precautions for patient (A) to include close monitoring and restrictions from interacting with other patients.
The Department reviewed the facility's report and supplemental documentation and found that the facility acted appropriately by reporting the occurrence, notifying the appropriate persons and agencies, intervening, escorting patient (A) to his room, assessing patient (B), offering pain medication, conducting an investigation, and initiating assault precautions for patient (A) that will limit interaction with peers and include close monitoring.
The Department will review this occurrence prior to any survey or upon receipt of any complaint that may be filed against this facility.
