DESCRIPTION OF OCCURRENCE:
On 08/29/15 male patient (A), in his 50s, struck male patient (B), who was in 30s.
The facility conducted an internal investigation. The facility notified the police and physician. Patient (A) approached patient (B) in an aggressive manner and told him to move. Patient (B) ignored him. Patient (A) responded by hitting patient (B) in the face, even after staff asked him to stop talking to patient (B). Staff intervened and placed patient (A) in a manual hold and separated the patients. Nursing assessed patient (B), who had a small cut on his face. First aid was provided and Tylenol administered for pain. Assault II precautions were implemented for patient (A). The plan of cares were updated to reflect the altercation and patient (B) resumed his daily routine without any indication of being fearful.
The Department reviewed the facility's report and found that the facility acted appropriately by reporting the occurrence, notifying the appropriate persons and agencies, separating the patients, providing first aid, updating the care plan and implementing assault II precautions for patient (A).
The Department will review this occurrence prior to any survey or upon receipt of any complaint that may be filed against this facility.
