DESCRIPTION OF OCCURRENCE:
On 06/09/15 two male patients were involved in an altercation. Both patients were in their 20s.
The facility conducted an internal investigation. The facility notified appropriate administrative personnel and internal security. Both patients were standing in line waiting for their medications and started arguing. Patient (B) hit patient (A). Staff separated the residents and assessed patient (A). He had redness and swelling on the left side of his head. Neurological checks and vital signs were within normal limits. Ice was applied and x-rays were obtained which revealed no fractures. Patient (A) stated he was fearful of patient (B), but felt compelled to approach him. Patient (B) sustained swelling to his hand and denied pain. Patient (B) was placed on assault II precautions. Both patients were placed on peer restriction from each other and patient (A) moved to another wing.
The Department reviewed the facility's report and found that the facility acted appropriately by reporting the occurrence, notifying the appropriate persons and agencies, separating the patients, assessing the patients, providing treatments, conducting an internal investigation, placing assault II precautions and moving patient (A) to another wing.
The Department will review this occurrence prior to any survey or upon receipt of any complaint that may be filed against this facility.
