DESCRIPTION OF OCCURRENCE:
On 06/05/15 a staff member alleged male patient, in his 50s, did not received needed incontinence care.
The facility conducted an internal investigation. The facility notified the physician, police department, and appropriate facility administration and personnel. A staff member reported the patient had been walking around all day in a sagging and soiled depends. The staff member stated when they informed the nurse. The nurse replied to allow the next shift to care for the resident's soiled depends. The nurse was suspended pending the investigation. The patient was cleaned and assessed. The patient had no signs of skin irritation and no skin breakdown. The facility determined the nurse had postponed patient care after being informed the patient was soiled. The nurse resigned in lieu of termination.
The Department reviewed the facility's report and supplemental documentation and found that the facility acted appropriately by reporting the occurrence, notifying the appropriate persons and agencies, suspending the alleged nurse, cleaning the patient and conducting an investigation.
The Department will review this occurrence prior to any survey or upon receipt of any complaint that may be filed against this facility.
