DESCRIPTION OF OCCURRENCE:
On 06/05/15 two male patients were involved in a physical altercation. Both patients were in their 70s.
The facility conducted an internal investigation. The facility notified the physician and internal security. Patient (A) reported patient (B) hit him. Patient (B) acknowledged he hit patient (A) because he did not like him. Staff separated the patients and took patient (A) to the treatment room for an assessment. Patient (A) complained of a headache and staff noted there was a small, reddened area where he was hit. Tylenol was administered for pain and the vital signs were taken and were within normal limits. Assault II precautions were implemented for patient (B). Patient (A) did not appear to have any concerns following the assault. Staff reviewed both patient care plans and made revisions pertinent to this assault. Staff will continue to monitor both patients and intervene as needed.
The Department reviewed the facility's report and found that the facility acted appropriately by reporting the occurrence, notifying the appropriate persons and agencies, separating the patients, assessing the patients, treating patient (A), reviewing and revising the care plans and initiating assault II precautions for patient (B).
The Department will review this occurrence prior to any survey or upon receipt of any complaint that may be filed against this facility.
