DESCRIPTION OF OCCURRENCE:
On 04/27/15 a female patient in her 50s was allegedly verbally abused by a staff member.

FACILITY ACTION:
The facility conducted an internal investigation. The facility notified the police department and appropriate facility administration and personnel. A staff member (1) approached the patient and confronted the patient about a situation that had occurred earlier in the day. The staff member (1) and the patient began arguing with their voices getting louder. Staff member (2) made several attempts to intervene but the argument continued. Staff member (2) asked patient to go to her room and the patient went to her room. The patient was assessed and reported feeling humiliated, stressed and fearful of staff member (1). Staff member (1) was placed on administrative leave. Interviews confirmed the incident had occurred, however, there were conflicting reports whether the staff member was inappropriate. The alleged staff member has returned to work. The facility has implemented a performance improvement plan for staff member (1), which includes scheduled training courses for various conflict resolution techniques and workplace behaviors. The facility will monitor the staff member and meet with staff member (1) on a weekly basis for three months.

DEPARTMENT FINDINGS:
The Department reviewed the facility's report and supplemental documentation and found that the facility acted appropriately by reporting the occurrence, notifying the appropriate persons and agencies, attempting to intervene, asking the resident to walk away, suspending the alleged staff member, conducting an investigation, initiating a performance improvement plan for the alleged staff member, and monitoring the staff member on a weekly basis for three months.

The Department will review this occurrence prior to any survey or upon receipt of any complaint that may be filed against this facility.
