DESCRIPTION OF OCCURRENCE:
On 01/02/15 male patient (A), in his 60s, struck male patient (B) also in his 60s.
The facility conducted an internal investigation. The facility notified the physician and the police department. Staff heard someone yelling in the hall and observed patient (A) hit patient (B) several times on the head. Staff placed patient (A) in a manual hold and escorted him to his room. Patient (B) complained of pain and was administered medication. Patient (B) was assessed and had no visible injury. Both patients had mental health diagnoses. Staff were interviewed and stated patient (A) could be intrusive at times and had been reminded to not involve himself in other people's affairs. Patient (A) was placed on assault ll precautions and staff will monitor the patient's closely.
The Department reviewed the facility's report and supplemental documentation and found that the facility acted appropriately by reporting the occurrence, notifying the appropriate persons and agencies, conducting an investigation, placing patient (A) in a manual hold, separating the patients, assessing and treating patient (B), placing patient (A) on assault ll precautions, and monitoring the patients closely.
No deficient practice was cited. The Department will review this occurrence prior to any survey or upon receipt of any complaint that may be filed against this facility.
