DESCRIPTION OF OCCURRENCE:
On 12/24/14 patient (A), in his teens, spat in the face of patient (B), who was also in his teens.
The facility conducted an internal investigation. The facility notified the police, physician and families/guardians. Staff heard patient (B) confronting patient (A) as they left the Recreation Center. Patient (B) reported patient (A) had spat in his face. Patient (A) said it was an accident, but patient (B) thought it was intentional. Staff immediately assisted patient (B) to flush his eyes and face wit water. A Hepatitis and HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) panel was drawn on patient (A) and the results were negative for HIV or any other blood borne pathogen. The patients were kept apart and monitored closely by staff.
The Department reviewed the facility's report and supplemental documentation and found that the facility acted appropriately by reporting the occurrence, notifying the appropriate persons and agencies, conducting an investigation, assessing, treating and monitoring patient (A) and keeping the patients apart and closely monitored.
No deficient practice was cited. The Department will review this occurrence prior to any survey or upon receipt of any complaint that may be filed against this facility.
