DESCRIPTION OF OCCURRENCE:
On 12/13/14 two male patients got into an altercation. Patient (A) was in his 20s, and patient (B) was in his teens.
The facility conducted an internal investigation. The facility notified the police and the physician. The patients were walking to their rooms for quiet hour when patient (B) pushed the door open, hitting patient (A) in the head. Patient (A) attempted to slam the door shut to lock it, but was unable to do so. The patients began fighting and hitting each other. Staff intervened and were able to separate them. Patient (B) was assessed and had an abrasion with bruising to his right eye. The area was cleaned and the patient was sent for an x-ray for a possible fracture. The x-ray was negative. Patient (A) was assessed for complaints of numbness and tingling in his right leg where he was kicked. There was noticeable bruising to the area on his leg. He was transferred to a hospital emergency room for further evaluation and no further treatment was necessary. The patients were placed on assault II precautions.
The Department reviewed the facility's report and supplemental documentation and found that the facility acted appropriately by reporting the occurrence, notifying the appropriate persons and agencies, separating the patients, assessing and treating patient (B), sending patient (A) to the hospital for evaluation and treatment, and placing both patients on assault II precautions.
No deficient practice was cited. The Department will review this occurrence prior to any survey or upon receipt of any complaint that may be filed against this facility.
