Report Timely: Yes
Type of Occurrence: Abuse/Physical
DESCRIPTION OF OCCURRENCE:
On 11/30/14 a male patient, in his 60s, hit a female patient, who was in her 50s.
The facility conducted an internal investigation. The facility notified police and the physician. The female had reported to staff that the male had cut in front of her in the line near the medication window. Staff went over to the medication line to speak to the male. The female then came and cut in front of the male. The male patient responded by swinging his arm and hitting the female in the mouth. Staff separated them. The female was assessed and had a small abrasion on the inside of her lower lip. She was offered an ice pack but refused. The male was escorted to his room for a time out. Both patients were placed on assault precautions by the physician.
The Department reviewed the facility's report and supplemental documentation and found that the facility acted appropriately by reporting the occurrence, notifying the appropriate persons and agencies, separating the patients, escorting the male to his room for time out, assessing the female and placing both residents on assault precautions.
No deficient practice was cited. The Department will review this occurrence prior to any survey or upon receipt of any complaint that may be filed against this facility.
