DESCRIPTION OF OCCURRENCE:
On 11/25/14 a male patient, in his 60s, reported he was missing $15.00 in cash.
The facility conducted an internal investigation. The facility notified the police department. The patient asked a staff member to cover him up during the night. Another staff member witnessed the staff member enter the patient's room, cover him up and leave. Approximately, three hours later, the patient was sitting in the hall and accused the staff member of stealing $15.00 when she was his room. The patient stated the money was kept in the inside pocket of his jacket. His room and belongings were searched but the missing money was not found. The facility encourages patients to keep their money in the facility safe. The patient refused to secure his money in the facility safe. He had difficulty managing his money on the unit and will be required to have his money secured in the facility safe.
The Department reviewed the facility's report and supplemental documentation and found that the facility acted appropriately by reporting the occurrence, notifying the appropriate persons and agencies, conducting an internal investigation, interviewing patient and staff, completing a search for the missing money, and encouraging patients to keep their money secured in the facility safe.
No deficient practice was cited. The Department will review this occurrence prior to any survey or upon receipt of any complaint that may be filed against this facility.
