DESCRIPTION OF OCCURRENCE:
On 11/12/14 male patient (A), in his 40s, was involved in a physical altercation with male patient (B), who was in his late teens.
The facility conducted an internal investigation. The facility notified police and the physician. The patients were in the day hall. Staff observed patient (A) hitting patient (B) in the head with a closed fist. Both patients fell to the floor. Staff were able to separate them. Patient (A) was bitten on the right upper arm by patient (B). Both patients were assessed. Patient (A) had teeth marks and bruising to his upper arm but his skin was not broken. The area was cleaned and his vital signs taken which were in normal limits. Patient (B) had slight redness to his forehead and his vital signs were also within normal limits. Patient (B) was escorted to his room and placed on assault precautions. Patient (A) resided on a different wing from patient (B).
The Department reviewed the facility's report and supplemental documentation and found that the facility acted appropriately by reporting the occurrence, notifying the appropriate persons and agencies, separating the patients, assessing both patients, treating patient (A) and placing patient (B) on assault precautions.
No deficient practice was cited. The Department will review this occurrence prior to any survey or upon receipt of any complaint that may be filed against this facility.
