DESCRIPTION OF OCCURRENCE:
On 10/25/14 male patient (A), in his 30s, bit male patient (B), who was in his 20s.
The facility conducted an internal investigation. The facility notified the physician and the police department. The two residents began to argue when patient (A) suddenly attacked and bit patient (B) on the wrist and chest area. Staff intervened and separated them. Both patients had been diagnosed with mental health issues. Patient (A) was taken to the seclusion room with restraint. Patient (B) was assessed and noted to have a bite to his right wrist with minor bruising and superficial marks on his skin. He also sustained bruising on his chest. Treatment to the wrist area was provided. Patient (B) stated he was not fearful of patient (A) but indicated he wanted to press charges against patient (A). Patient (A) was placed on assault ll precautions. The patient rooms are on separate wings away from each other.
The Department reviewed the facility's report and supplemental documentation and found that the facility acted appropriately by reporting the occurrence, notifying the appropriate persons and agencies, conducting an internal investigation, separating the patients, assessing and treating patient (B), moving patient (A) to the locked seclusion room, and placing patient (A) on assault ll precautions.
No deficient practice was cited. The Department will review this occurrence prior to any survey or upon receipt of any complaint that may be filed against this facility.
