|Facility: COLORADO MENTAL HEALTH INSTITUTE AT PUEBLO-PSYCH
Date of Occurrence: 10/14/2014
Report Timely: Yes
Type of Occurrence: Misappropriation of Property
DESCRIPTION OF OCCURRENCE:
On 10/14/14 a male patient, in his 40s, reported he was missing $15.00.
The facility conducted an internal investigation. The facility notified police. The patient reported the money had been missing for 3 - 4 days.
A search was conducted but it was not located. Patients on this unit are allowed to keep $15.00 in their possession to use for canteen or vending machines. It is the expectation on this unit that they are responsible to secure their money if they choose to keep it. They can also have their money locked up in a safe on the unit. The money is kept in an envelope in the safe and the amount of funds is tracked on the envelope. Only the medication nurse has access to the safe and the money is counted each shift. Patients also have the option of sending their money to patient accounts. The patient was re-educated individually about the expectation of keeping his money safe if he chooses to maintain control. He was also reminded he can place the money in the safe on the unit. All patients on the unit were also re-educated about the above information in a Community Meeting.
The Department reviewed the facility's report and supplemental documentation and found that the facility acted appropriately by reporting the occurrence, notifying the appropriate persons and agencies, conducting a search and investigation and reminding this patient and all patients on the unit of their options for securing money.
No deficient practice was cited. The Department will review this occurrence prior to any survey or upon receipt of any complaint that may be filed against this facility.
