DESCRIPTION OF OCCURRENCE:
On 10/13/14 male patient (A) hit and attempted to kick male patient (B). Both patients were in their 30s.

FACILITY ACTION:
The facility conducted an internal investigation. The facility notified police and the physician. Patient (B) was in the quiet living area when patient (A) ran up to him and hit him. Patient (B) blocked a kick with his right knee. Patient (A) claimed that patient (B) had flipped him off and staff that were present at the time witnessed this. Staff separated both of the patients and escorted both of them to their rooms. Patient (B) reported pain in his right knee that he rated a 5/10 following the incident. Patient (B) was assessed and had no visible injury. He refused
vital signs. Patient (B) was given an over the counter pain reliever. The physician placed both patients on assault II precautions and wing restriction. They do not live on the same wing and staff continue to monitor for safety.

DEPARTMENT FINDINGS:
The Department reviewed the facility's report and supplemental documentation and found that the facility acted appropriately by reporting the occurrence, notifying the appropriate persons and agencies, separating the patients, assessing and treating patient (B), placing both patients on assault precautions and wing restriction and monitoring the patients for safety.

No deficient practice was cited. The Department will review this occurrence prior to any survey or upon receipt of any complaint that may be filed against this facility.
